“Every symbol carries a story. In my work, I draw from various sources: sometimes starting with a traditional symbol and creating a family of variations; other times transforming a textile motif into a symbol, such as a flower extracted from a printed skirt.

My collection of blocks features both intact, traditional symbols and reinterpreted elements that have become symbols in their own right.

I preserve their original histories and meanings, while also showing how the same symbol can hold different connotations in different cultural contexts. At the same time, each person may give it a personal significance, a motif, a pattern, or even a tattoo itself can become a symbol when it resonates with someone’s experience.

 

This dialogue between cultural history and individual interpretation is central to my practice.”
